Pediatric Third Department (Pediatric Surgery Department)

The Pediatric Third Department, also known as the Pediatric Surgery Department, operates within the Chongqing Health Center for Women and Children (Women and Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University), or CQHCWC. The department comprises 43 patient beds and specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of various pediatric surgical conditions, including general surgery, neonatology, urology, and orthopedics. Led by Chief Physician Guo Chunbao, a renowned expert and professor in the fields of neonatal and pediatric surgery, the department offers comprehensive care for complex diseases, particularly those affecting newborns.

The department has collaborated with distinguished domestic experts to establish a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach, integrating the expertise of newborn and pediatric surgeons. This approach facilitates the diagnosis and treatment of congenital anomalies, as well as neonatal and childhood diseases.

Area of expertise:

The current diagnosis and treatment services encompass a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:

1. Diagnosis and treatment of critical illnesses in newborns : These include neonatal enterocolitis (NEC), meconium peritonitis, gastroschisis, omphalocele, esophageal atresia, gastric perforation, hypertrophic pyloric obstruction, intestinal malrotation, intestinal atresia, and anal atresia.

2. General surgical conditions in children: The department manages common ailments such as inguinal hernia, intestinal obstruction, and appendicitis. Additionally, the department specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric urological conditions, including phimosis, urethral fissures, sheath effusion, cryptorchidism, and hydronephrosis. Moreover, the department's expertise extends to pediatric orthopedic disorders, such as limb fractures and dislocations, hand trauma, developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), polydactyly (toe deformity), congenital muscular torticollis, cervical subluxation, trigger finger, ganglion cyst, popliteal cyst, and subcutaneous mass of limbs. Lastly, it addresses other childhood diseases such as tumors, traumas, burns, and scrotal emergencies.

The treatment center is equipped with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including cystoscope, laparoscope, and thoracoscope. Furthermore, the center boasts two world-leading German Storze 3D laparoscopic integrated operating rooms and an endoscopic training center. Laparoscopy is employed in over 70 percent of pediatric surgeries, showcasing its remarkable efficacy.
