I. What is chronic pelvic pain?

Chronic pelvic pain is a disease caused by pelvic organic and organ functional reasons. It lasts for more than six months with acyclic pain, which seriously affects the quality of life for patients.

II. Types of chronic pelvic pain

Chronic pelvic pain can be mainly divided into specific disease-related pelvic pain and chronic pelvic pain syndrome.

Specific disease-related pelvic pain refers to pain with a clear etiology, such as infection, inflammation, trauma, etc.

Chronic pelvic pain syndrome refers to pain with no clear etiology, mainly associated with overactive pelvic floor muscles.

III. Common causes of chronic pelvic pain

Pelvic congestion syndrome, endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, depression, chronic pelvic inflammation, etc.

IV. Performances of chronic pelvic pain

Chronic pelvic pain can lead to vulvar pain, pelvic pain, anorectal pain, or dyspareunia, among others. The pain cannot be relieved by conventional treatment, and will last for more than six months.

Due to the complex etiology of the disease, a patient's pain may originate from the abnormal function of one organ or multiple organs. Doctors must inquire about the patient's medical history in as much detail as possible and conduct a comprehensive physical examination.

V. Treatment principles for chronic pelvic pain syndrome

Treatment is mainly conducted to relieve pain and improve the quality of life of patients, and is mainly based on comprehensive and individualized treatment.

VI. Treatment methods

1. Rehabilitation

Mainly relaxes the pelvic floor muscles by improving and correcting the excessive activity of the muscles. Pain relief methods include pelvic floor rehabilitation magnetic and electrical stimulation, myofascial massage, home training-relaxation therapy, and biofeedback therapy.

2. Drug therapy

Using drugs such as analgesics, hormone drugs, antidepressants, psychological adjustment drugs, etc.

3. Traditional Chinese medicine treatment

Traditional Chinese medicine retention enema, acupuncture, etc.

4. Psychotherapy

Psychological counseling, relaxation therapy, etc.
