What you should know about hepatitis B during pregnancy

Updated: 2022-09-02

1. If the mother does not have hepatitis B, will the father transmit it to the baby?

No. Babies only need to be routinely vaccinated against hepatitis B after birth.

2. Can the expectant mother take antiviral medicine during pregnancy?

Yes. If the mother has a high-titer hepatitis B virus number, which means that the HBV DNA of the pregnant woman is greater than the fifth power of 2*10, she should take medicine from the third trimester, starting between 28 and 32 weeks before delivery. While after birth, the baby should receive hepatitis B and immune globulin vaccines as soon as possible. This will almost completely stop mother-to-child transmission.

3. Does the expectant mother need to be vaccinated with hepatitis B immune globulin in the third trimester?

No. This vaccination can neither effectively reduce the hepatitis B virus in the mother's body nor protect the baby through the placenta.

4. Is cesarean section less likely to infect the baby than natural delivery?

No. Cesarean section cannot reduce the baby's hepatitis B infection risk, so natural labor is recommended, as it is better for both the mother and baby.

5. Can mothers with hepatitis B breastfeed the baby?

Yes. Breastfeeding will not increase the chance of the baby being infected with hepatitis B, and the mother doesn't need to test the hepatitis B virus in the milk.

6. Does the baby need a second dose of immune globulin?

No. The effect of two injections is equivalent to that of one.
