In accordance with the "Act now for safe and respectful childbirth" initiative put forward by the World Health Organization and with the motto "Safe maternal and newborn care", the Chongqing Health Center for Women and Children (CQHCWC) in Southwest China's Chongqing has taken a number of measures to mark the 3rd World Patient Safety Day, which fell on Sept 17.

It has worked to increase the rate of safe childbirths by renovating the pre-delivery rooms, adding delivery analgesia rooms, standardizing delivery analgesia, strengthening the hierarchical management of midwives, and adopting various measures to help with delivery.

The CQHCWC has also implemented high-quality medical care for newborns, stimulated the intrauterine environment to provide developmental support care for premature infants, established a donated breast milk bank, and achieved a 100-percent breastfeeding rate.

In addition, it has strengthened ties between the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and home nursing and set up a follow-up clinic for high-risk infants and a neonatal critical illness referral network and green channel – all in an effort to offer better care for newborns.

Furthermore, the center has strengthened the management of obstetric specialty diseases. Focused on the safety of mothers and babies, it is continuing to carry out quality improvement projects in areas such as twin thrombosis management, safe insulin medication, and prevention of neonatal hypothermia.

It has also implemented a planned cesarean section women's perioperative rapid recovery of intestinal function and built a special disease management model for gestational diabetes to achieve continuous management throughout the perinatal period for pregnant women.
