Things you should know about abdominal ultrasonography in kids

Updated: 2020-05-11

There are many and complex causes of abdominal pain in children. Abdominal ultrasonography can help doctors identify the true causes of abdominal pain and then help doctors develop the best treatment plan. So, what common diseases can abdominal ultrasonography help diagnose.

1. Acute mesenteric lymphadenitis is the most common.

Because of the thin abdominal wall, enlarged lymph nodes can be clearly detected by high-frequency ultrasound in children to determine whether they have acute mesenteric lymphadenitis, an allergic disease caused by abdominal lymphadenovirus infection, which most often occurs in children under 7 years of age.

2. Infantile intussusception is also a common clinical disease.

The age of onset is mostly within two years old, and four to 10 year-old infants are the most common. The term refers to the phenomenon were a section of intestinal tube is inserted into the connected intestinal lumen -- and it is also one of the most common factors leading to the occurrence of acute intestinal obstruction in infants. Children affected are mostly brought to the hospital for acute abdominal pains, crying, bloody stools and other reasons.

Because the ultrasonographic manifestations of intussusception are very typical, ultrasonography is particularly important and advantageous for the early diagnosis of intussusception in children.

3. The incidence of appendicitis in children is lower than that in adults, but it is still a common cause of abdominal pain in children.

High-frequency abdominal ultrasonography can not only find the thickened appendix, whether there are effusions and fecal stones in it, but also help physicians understand the degree of development of the disease, to help determine whether there is a perforation of the appendix.

Abdominal ultrasonography can visually show the situation of various organs in the abdominal cavity and it has the advantages of simplicity, rapidity, non-invasiveness, non-radiation, repeatability and accuracy. That makes it the preferred imaging examination method for children with abdominal pain.
