Tips on promoting motor ability of 0-3 year-old infants

Updated: 2020-03-06

Exercise is very important for infant's health. It can improve the organ functions, enhance the body's resistance to disease and promote the development of physical and psychological behavior.

Here are some suggestions on how to promote the development of motor abilities for an infant aged 0-3.

1.  Principles of infants' motions

(1).According to the characteristics of infants’ motion development, arrange colorful and fun sports games.

(2). Combine indoor and outdoor activities, dynamic and static activities.

(3). No more than one hour of activity per day.

(4). Pay attention to the differences between infants and promote the personality development of infants.

2.  Specific measures to promote the motor abilities of infants of different months.

For 0-6-month infants:

(1). Mainly passive movements, arrange interactive play based on floor games -- both prone or supine, touching -- and practice the ability to raise their  head, chest, turn over and sit.

(2). Parents interact with babies by various games -- such as watching colored balls, listening to sounds, touching games, finding sounds, holding and gripping toys, amusing games, using toys specifically designed to look at, looking in the mirror, communicating pronunciation and playing peekaboo.

For 6-11-month infants:

(1). Floor activities are still the main way to promote touching and gripping ability, through games. You can practice their body's movement ability by letting baby climb obstacles and walk on a rail.

(2). Enhance interaction with infants through interactive games.

For 12-23-month infants:

(1). At least 180 minutes of activity at any intensity every day for infants over 1 year’s old.

(2). At this stage, the baby's activities should be a combination of active and passive activities, suitable for both dynamic and static activities. Both indoors and outdoor activities can be used. Parents can help the baby recognize objects, graffiti, play football, climb stairs and explore in different environments.

For 24-36-month infants:

(1). Infants of this age group have at least 3 hours of activity per day, with varying intensity, including moderate and high-intensity sports activities.

(2). Mainly active movements or sports.

(3). Parents should ensure the safety of all kinds of activities and ensure that children always move within their own sight range to avoid safety incidents.

3.  Matters needing attention

(1). The activities and games for babies should be done step by step.

(2). Parents need to choose the reasonable levels of intensity, time, frequency and type of games and activities.

(3). To make infants and children enjoy the fun of games, learn the ability in games.

(4). In the game, safety measures must be taken for infants. At the same time, parents should have a certain first-aid ability to actively deal with safety incidents as soon as possible.

(5). Parents should try to recognize the development bias in infants early on in the games.
